STUDY OF THE NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE ATMOSPHERIC AIR AS A RESULT OF FIRES AT SOLID MUNICIPAL WASTE LANDFILLS

Abstract:
Fires at waste storage and disposal facilities in our country are a pressing environmental issue. Fires at waste disposal sites can be caused by spontaneous combustion of deep-seated waste, overheating of equipment, mechanical damage, open flames, arson, failure to comply with waste containment requirements, and other factors. Landfill fires are hazardous man-made emergencies that undoubtedly damage atmospheric air, a component of the environment, as waste fires typically release toxic substances such as dioxins and furans. This study analyzes the impact of fires at municipal solid waste landfills on the atmosphere using the example of a fire at a municipal solid waste landfill in the Volgograd Region in 2025. It also calculates the environmental damage to the atmosphere using current methodologies. Proposals are provided for updating and improving the methodology for calculating the damage to the atmosphere as a result of municipal solid waste landfill fires.
