Based on the analysis of environmental disasters in the territory and waters of Russia over the past five years, the article presents data on the causes of their occurrence, the scale of the consequences of human habitat pollution, material damage, and the duration of the aftermath. Based on the analysis of existing methods and methods for eliminating oil product spills, problems in the organization and implementation of measures to eliminate the consequences of oil product spills on soil and marine areas have been revealed. Ways to improve measures to localize and eliminate the consequences of the spill are proposed: to improve mechanical methods by creating new types of sorbents, to improve monitoring and forecasting of such accidents, to increase the operational readiness of the forces and means of EMERCOM of Russia in order to prevent and eliminate pollution of the water area through the use of modern small vessels equipped with more effective means of protecting oil spills and collecting in ports where tankers are moored, tactics of their use, improvement of chemical and physico-chemical methods for cleaning and localization of pollution, promising measures to restore ecosystems after oil spills.
