The article is devoted to the world history of large-scale radiation accidents. The consequences and lessons learned are discussed, beginning with the events in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In a chronological order, known radiation accidents, not related to the explosion of bombs, are listed. The consequences of fires and accidents at nuclear power plants are briefly described. The world experience of emergency rescue and recovery operations for eliminating the consequences of radiation emergencies is considered.
