The origins and approaches to the definition of the concept of «hero» from Ancient Greece to modern Russia are considered. On the basis of open sources, the life path of E.N. Chernyshev is presented. The memoirs of E.N. Chernyshev of his senior mentors, fellow students, colleagues are given and the character traits that manifested themselves in school years, years of study at the Leningrad fire-technical school of the Ministry of internal affairs of the USSR and in the service of the fire department of Moscow are revealed. On the example of E.N. Chernyshev, the question is investigated: What qualities are inherent in the hero of the modern era – an employee of EMERCOM of Russia?
