The paper examines the historical aspects of the development of subways and their importance for ensuring the vital activity of large cities and megacities. Special attention is paid to the Leningrad/Saint-Petersburg metro is the second most important in the Russian Federation. Information is provided about subway lines and stations, the dynamics of their commissioning, the prospects for the development of the subway and its leaders. It is also shown that due to the high-energy saturation of stations and tunnels, it is necessary to pay special attention to its fire safety. The statistics of emergency situations related to fires at the facilities of the Saint-Petersburg metro are given.
