The article provides a brief review and criteria-based analysis of studies dedicated to the problem of optimal/rational placement of emergency rescue units. Key approaches to solving this problem are considered, including mathematical optimization methods, geoinformation technologies, and simulation modeling. An analysis of relevant works was conducted based on fourteen criteria, which were the following characteristics: objective, subject area, problem being solved, solution methods, model used, input data, output data, tools applied, implementation degree, calculated metrics, optimality criteria, objective function, development prospects, limitations, and assumptions. These criteria will help to draw more precise and specific conclusions for the modernization of the stated problem of optimal/rational emergency rescue units placement.
