The article is focused on determining the requirements of the sociocultural approach to foreign language teaching for specific purposes of the specialists of EMERCOM of Russia. The author examines the main aspects of language competency: linguistic, sociocultural and profession-focused. The author specifies the pedagogical requirements which are to be taken in account in the process of teaching a foreign language for specific purposes.
