Представлен обзор канадских исследований в области прогнозирования и мониторинга природных пожаров. Ко всемирно признанным достижениям канадских ученых относится разработанная ими научно обоснованная комплексная система мониторинга и прогнозирования пожарной опасности лесов, включающая подсистему индексирования пожароопасной погоды и подсистему прогнозирования поведения пожаров, а также результаты исследования взаимосвязи изменения климата, лесных пожаров, лесохозяйственных практик и практик пожаротушения, качественно-количественного состава лесов, на основании которых предлагаются стратегические подходы для контроля и управления лесными пожарами, в том числе чрезвычайного характера, представляющими серьезную угрозу для человеческого общества в социально-экономическом и экологическом аспектах.
