The analysis of forest fires as a complex negative phenomenon of natural and anthropogenic origin and threatening fire and environmental safety is presented. The causes and consequences of forest fires are analyzed. Attention is paid to fire safety standards, rules and requirements in forests. Special attention is paid to the criminal-legal aspect of the characteristics of forest fires as a criminal phenomenon. In particular, the authors analyze the elements of crimes provided for in articles 219 and 261 of the Criminal code of the Russian Federation, the signs of which are forest fires and violations of fire protection requirements in forests. It is concluded that there is a need for differentiation and a possible combination of these crimes.
